How to overcome procrastination (and finally get things done)
Feeling chained down by procrastination?
You're not alone. In fact, it's estimated that 95% of people experience some form of procrastination in their lives. And sometimes the feeling of procrastination can be so strong it is completely overwhelming and paralyzing. But there is a way to break free and overcome it.
Throughout my life and career, there have been many times I struggled with procrastination and in fact, it is one of the most common challenges I help clients overcome. The following is one surefire method to break free from procrastination and get on the pathway to progress.
First things first, you must take action! Any action is better than no action. Just get yourself in gear and start doing something. By taking action, it helps to get the body in motion which helps to get the mind on track. Following the old saying, we can’t think ourselves into different action we must act ourselves into different thinking. Thereby, taking a small simple step, even if that just going out for a walk or taking a few minutes to journal, just take action.
Second, once we’re in motion from taking action we must continue to persevere regardless of how much we feel like quitting. This point really speaks to a deep subject matter, mindset, which we won’t go too deep into here. But the thing to focus on is just goading yourself to do one more. Whether that’s one more task, one more hour, or even one more minute of work, just keep repeating to yourself internally, “just do one more!” Be your own cheerleader and speak positively to yourself while encouraging yourself in consistent persistence.
The third and final step of this simple method is to celebrate your win at the end of the task or project. It may sound a little funny, but just saying, “Yes” emphatically while pumping your fist in the air helps to connect new neuron pathways in the brain and stimulate the release of endorphins throughout your system. It is highly important to direct our internal dialogue and encourage good behavior in ourselves. And it is vitally important to use positive reinforcement to build our good habits and confidence in overcoming procrastination.
You don’t have to wait for motivation or inspiration before doing something great with your life. It doesn’t matter if it's a big project at work, an exciting new hobby, or just getting out there and meeting new people - all these things are possible when you take action now! The only thing standing between where you are now and where you want to be is time wasted on waiting for the perfect moment instead of starting today! So let's get started right away! Let's beat procrastination together so that we can start living our best lives today!
